gxwalsh First thing I would check (which you may have already) is that the record head is clean. Q tip and alcohol should do the trick there. Record heads can also build up magnetic polarization over times, which can be fixed with a demagnitizer en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassette_demagnetizer
