                1. This reminds me of the time I had to leave CHI 2009 early because of Pesach (Passover). Which in turn reminds me of a very on-brand story: arcticpenguin/1374366484093358080

I was a first-year master’s student at umsi competing in the #chi09 Student Design Competition. My team had advanced to the final round, and the final presentations were going to be after I left for Pesach.

So, I spent some time in the convention center putting together a screencast to be played during the final presentation, effectively letting me pull my weight by presenting remotely and asynchronously.

But I started thinking about recording a voiceover and realized there was NO WAY it was going to sound good enough for my standards if I recorded it on my laptop’s internal mic in a hotel room. (This was before I had a smartphone, even.)

Did I give up in the face of adversity and the prospect of poor sound quality? No! CHI 2009 was in Boston, so I texted my cousin abigailbeshkin, who worked at WBUR at the time, and asked if I could come down to the studio to record a VO.

She said yes, so that’s exactly what I did. I took the green line to the radio station, she set me up in a small studio, and I recorded my VO. (If only I’d had a Shure MV88 at the time!) Noleli/1470753255

And we won the SDC that year! I certainly can’t attribute our win to the sound quality of my screencast, but I was told that when they pushed play, people did notice. And that’s how I ended up recording a VO at WBUR for a CHI talk. All thanks to CHI overlapping with Pesach.

Epilogue: what do I do now? UX for shure, one of the biggest microphone companies out there. That checks out. I totally wasn’t planning on going this direction when starting this thread, but if you want to work with me, we’re hiring! careers-shure.icims.com/jobs/search?ss=1&searchCategory=25625
