Hot take: writing slow code is unethical. We need new devices every few years to do mostly the same stuff the old ones did. Software gets bloated and slow, and devs assume that better hardware will pick up the slack. So we need better hardware. Ad infinitum.

It’s a sustainability problem because of all the raw materials, waste, and climate impacts. It’s an economic justice problem because you need new devices to participate in the economy but many can’t afford them.
