              1. Ah, my least favorite but most worth it annual ritual: negotiating Comcast back down to the introductory rate. ✅

Had a few people ask what I did. First, for the last several years I’ve done it via Twitter DM. I don’t know if it goes to the same “chat center” as chatting on their site, but they people on Twitter seem reasonable. Here’s what I did this year: tweetjoshtweet abionsky MattH

I’d been paying $50 for 300/10 and they bumped it up to $80. Before reaching out, I did my research. I figured out what my plan (or similar) costs now, and what it costs from competitors.

In starting the conversation, I was straightforward about what I wanted: I said the price went up and I wanted to see what we could do about that. In my experience, they’re receptive to that, and it seems to be policy to work with you.

Once I confirmed that I wanted to stick with my current speeds, I threw out what it costs for new customers today. (That happened to be what I’d been paying for it this last year.) They came back with something that would be $5/mo more than that.

I could have walked away with that, but $55 > $50 so I pushed a bit further. I sent a screenshot of an offer from Astound (formerly RCN). I didn’t explicitly threaten to switch. I may have had better luck, but was timid about the bluff this year. (I can’t get RCN in my building.)

They said no, but I asked one more time, suggesting a contract, and magically another $5 fell off. Now back at what I’d been paying for the last year, and down the full $30 that they’d raised it on me, I called it quits and accepted the offer. YMMV, but it worked for me.
