I’ve been thinking a lot about ICE and whether I have what it takes to use my privilege as a white citizen by physically positioning myself between them and their victims. Would they hurt or kill me? No, I say to myself. That would be illegal.
-
Ha! As if law enforcement doesn’t illegally kill people all the time. Whether or not it’s illegal is immaterial if they aren’t being held accountable. If they can use violence without fear of consequences, you get a police force that acts with impunity.

This administration has made its priorities clear: brown people aren’t welcome, and it’s ICE’s job to enforce that. Is that legal? Tenuously, maybe. Is excessive force legal? No, but there’s clearly no one to stop them when we can’t even get local police forces under control.

There’s a name for a police force that answers only to the executive and believes itself* above the law: the Gestapo.

#blacklivesmatter is the tip of the iceberg of why police accountability is important. It’s about rule of law. It’s about not living in a police state. PoC are, unfortunately, the canaries in the coal mine. We all need to listen to what they’ve been saying for years.

* note: the Nazi Gestapo actually was above the law as of 1936. Let’s not get there.
